CBBC 1PM BST "Totally Doctor Who" ep 1
BBC Radio Wales 5:32PM BST "DrWho Back In Time" new episode
The Second Series of Doctor Who has its world premiere this weekend
on BBC One (and the BFBS TV service for UK servicemen abroad). It is
David Tennant's first full series as the Doctor (after a cameo in
The Parting Of The Ways, the Children In Need segment, and the
Christmas Invasion episode last year). Billie Piper returns as Rose
Tyler.
This time around, UK viewers get Doctor Who, Doctor Who Confidential
for a behind the scenes look after each episode, and Totally Doctor
Who - a new magazine format show to interest child and teen
audiences.
Doctor Who episodes premiere on BBC One Saturdays at 7:15PM (last
season was 7PM), with repeats on BBC Three Sundays in the 7PM hour
and Fridays at 9PM (the night before the next BBC One episode).
Doctor Who Confidential episodes premiere on BBC Three Saturdays at
8PM and are expected to be available online after broadcast again. I
expect additional repeats of Confidential will appear at the last
minute. Doctor Who Confidential is now hosted by Mark Gatiss, writer
of series 1 episode The Unquiet Dead. Totally Doctor Who episodes
premiere on BBC One Thursdays at 5PM (2 days before the related
Doctor Who episode), with repeats on CBBC Saturdays at 6:30PM and
Mondays at 1PM (extra Friday 6:30PM broadcast this week). Schedules
(particularly on BBC Three) can be changed on short notice.
As of this writing, the BBC intends to air Doctor Who over 13
straight weeks through 8 July. It is more likely that some episodes
could start late or be rescheduled to start early this year due to
various sports events and Eurovision on 20 May, but Doctor Who is
expected to avoid pre-emption in all these circumstances.
UK military servicemen overseas can see Doctor Who on three of the
BFBS TV Channels - BFBS 1, BFBS 2, and BFBS Navy. BFBS 1 and BFBS
Navy will air the new episodes 1 day after the UK premieres -
Sundays at 7:05PM Central European Time. BFBS 2 will air the new
episodes the following Friday night at 11:15PM Central European
Time, followed by Doctor Who Confidential at Midnight. BFBS Navy
then repeats the Doctor Who and Confidential episodes Saturday
mornings at 5:15 and 6AM Central European Time respectively. The
BFBS services will not be airing Totally Doctor Who as of this
writing.
BBC Two http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbctwo will repeat the 1965 Peter
Cushing film "Dr Who & The Daleks" this Thursday at 11:10AM BST as
part of the buildup to the new series. BBC Radio Wales
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/radiowales will air an episode of "Dr Who
Back In Time" on Monday at 5:32PM, Saturday 22 April at 12:31PM, and
Sunday 23 April at 4:32PM BST. .The content of this episode is
unclear (the Radio Time website is using the description of last
year's Dalek episode) - Outpost Gallifrey
http://www.gallifreyone.com reports that it will be a new episode.
ABC Australia http://www.abc.net.au/tv has reported that they will not air Doctor Who in May, and that their rights to air Series 2 begin on 1 June. If Doctor Who remains in the Saturday 7:30PM timeslot in Australia, then the earliest possible premiere date is now 3 June.
CBC Canada http://www.cbc.ca/television has signed on as a Co-
Producer on spinoff series "Torchwood", and is the first broadcaster
outside the UK to confirm they will air the episodes. Torchwood
stars John Barrowman as "Captain Jack" and Eve Myles as "Gwen" and
will premiere on BBC Three this Autumn. CBC is also the Canadian
broadcaster for Series 2 of Doctor Who. Last year episodes aired 10
days after the UK due to the National Hockey League being on strike.
This year episodes will air no earlier than Summer (after the Hockey
playoffs are over) and could be held till Autumn 2006 when ratings
will be higher.
KBTC/KCKA Tacoma/Centralia, WA http://www.kbtc.org might not have a pledge night to mark Doctor Who's return as previously reported. Eric Gjovaag of the Emerald City Androgums reports that KBTC's studios are in the middle of renovation, which could force a delay of the pledge night until KBTC's regular June pledge season. This is not supposed to delay the return date of the show to KBTC - currently 29 April. KBTC's listings still show the pledge night - hopefully updated information on what they are doing will appear within the week.
Russian channel STS TV completes its initial weekday run of Doctor Who today, and I cannot find it on the schedule afterwards. I would imagine that it will be rerun before too long. The show premiered weekdays at 4:30PM over a period of 2 ½ weeks.
Hungarian channel Cool TV http://www.cooltv.hu no longer shows
Doctor Who (Ki Vagi, Doki?) on its schedule. It does not look like
it is being pre-empted by Easter themed programming. Unless they
snuck in a marathon without word getting out, Cool TV appears to
have pulled the show without finishing Series 1. Hopefully the
Doctor Who fans in Hungary know what is going on and can get the
word out on the show's status - whatever it is.
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media
http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who
international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.
